Abstract Français:
Le trouble obsessionnel compulsif (TOC) est une
maladie psychiatrique répandue, chronique,
fluctuante et particulièrement invalidante. Plusieurs
catégories symptomatiques sont décrites, en
fonction des modes de présentation et des
mécanismes cognitifs sous-jacents. Il s’agit d’une
pathologie à composante génétique marquée, mais
certains facteurs environnementaux susceptibles
d’entraîner des lésions cérébrales,
particulièrement au niveau striatal, peuvent également en être
responsables. Le traitement recommandé
actuellement consiste en une association entre
traitement médicamenteux et psychothérapie
comportementale. Il permet souvent de diminuer de
manière significative l’impact fonctionnel de la pathologie même si les rémissions totales sont
l’exception.

Abstract in English:
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a
disabling psychiatric problem frequently
encountered, with a chronic, fluctuating course.
Several symptomatic categories are described,
depending on the kind of symptoms displayed
and on underlying cognitive disturbances and
beliefs. OCD has a strong genetic component but
environmental factors leading to cerebral lesions
in the striatum have also been implicated.
Treatment usually associates medication and
behavior therapy. It has a favorable impact, most
of the time, on the patients’ functioning, total
remission being rather rare.
